A series of film screenings and seminars at the V&A and Cine Lumiere will examine the connections between fashion and cinema, with a focus on Audrey Hepburn next month.
Called Audrey Hepburn: The Creation of a Style Icon, the series focuses on Hepburn’s entirely idiosyncratic style, unusual at the time as it was not created by any particular studio. The events, which kick off on Wednesday, will consider Hepburn’s career and the role of fashion – particularly that of Givenchy – in both her films and the creation of her off-screen image. Her unique contribution to the Cinderella myth, partly from her real-life rags-to-riches tale, partly through the roles she created, plus the symbiotic relationship between herself and Givenchy (who, exactly, was the responsible for the success of whom?) are key themes in the programme.
As well as screenings of Sabrina, How To Steal a Million and Two For The Road at Cine Lumiere, there are special events at the V&A including a three-part seminar on Hepburn’s role in fashion, and a talk by her son, Luca Dotti.
