Janeane Garofalo In Soho This Bank Holiday

Janeane Garofalo: indie goddess, lefty politics champion, movie star, stand up. It's the latter that brings her to these shores as she's doing three nights at the Soho Theatre from 25 August after a sell-out run earlier in the year.

Janeane Garofalo! If you've ever spent a hungover afternoon in front of Reality Bites then you'll likely be quite excited about this – her deadpan delivery just so much better than Winona Ryder's wispy girlishness, much like she kicked Uma Thurman's ass in The Truth About Cats And Dogs. There's less of the romcom leads these days but more telly and live stand up, although Splitsider has a very good piece on why her lower profile absolutely does not equate to a career winding down.

She's also been saddled with an unfair reputation for being a screechy liberal, when she's simply an intelligent woman not content to limit her stand up to gags about the difference between men and women or periods. We also love the unexpectedness of the word 'alacrity' dropped into a bit about ghosts (see the clip below). We can't imagine that falling easily from the lips of Micky Flanagan.

If the thought of seeing Garofalo in the intimate confines of the Soho Theatre's basement isn't enough, you also get a support set from US comedian, writer and occasional This American Life podcast contributor Dave Hill.

Janeane Garofalo is at the Soho Theatre, Dean Street W1, 25-27 August, 8pm, £20. For more information and to book see the Soho Theatre website.
