Get Political With Southbank Centre Talks

jiltedgenerationThings are getting political at the Southbank Centre over the next couple of months, with talks on undercover policing, Occupy and the precarious situation of Britain's young people.

Rob Evans co-wrote a book about the Metropolitan Police's Special Demonstration Squad, created to keep track of environmental, political and animal rights activists. Now notorious for revelations including undercover officers using dead children's names and having sexual relationships – even children – with the women they were monitoring. Evans and lawyer Harriet Wistrich, who represents eight of the women affected, talk about what's been discovered and the effects on 29 August, 7pm, £8.

Ever wondered why it's so hard for you to buy a property, why your job (if you have one) is definitely not for life and why you'll have to work for longer than your parents? Shiv Malik and Ed Howker wondered the same thing, and wrote Jilted Generation about how Britain's younger generation is being steadily screwed. The pair will be discussing the situation on 3 September, 6.30pm, £8.

On 15 October 2011, Occupy turned up on the steps of St Paul's after having been denied access to their original target, the London Stock Exchange. David Graeber, author of The Democracy Project and contributor to the Occupy movement worldwide, talks with Laurie Penny about Occupy's legacy, successes and failures. 15 October, 6.30pm, £8.
