Want to visit an abandoned London Underground station that few people have heard of? Quainton Road in Buckinghamshire was a former outpost of the network, which closed to passengers in 1963. This August, London Transport Museum’s Discover Forgotten Metro-land takes over the preserved station (now a small museum), with a packed programme of events.

Metro-land was a name given to the previously rural areas to the north west of London that were opened up for development by the Metropolitan Railway in the early 20th century. At Discover Forgotten Metro-land, visitors can explore this corner of London transport’s history and discover what it was like to travel by train during the Victorian era, with a series of events taken straight from retro, train-geek heaven.

Highlights include:

  • A wide range of vintage locomotives and carriages on display and in motion, including the Metropolitan Steam Locomotive No. 1, 1901 dining carriage and Churchill’s ‘Royal’ carriage.
  • Miniature railways complete with visiting mini Metropolitan locomotives, and model miniature railways.
  • An opportunity to try your hand at sorting the post on the Travelling Post Office Carriages.
  • A museum featuring London Underground memorabilia
  • Family fun with the opportunity for families to design their own Underground coat of arms, a runaway train Storytime, and the Metro-land Family Trail.
  • Film screenings such as Metro-Land - John Betjeman's 1973 documentary, A Trip on the Metropolitan Railway in 1910 - a film that turns the viewer into an Edwardian passenger, and 120 years of the Metropolitan Railway will be covered in a screening of Brill to Baker Street.

Discover Forgotten Metro-land takes place on Saturday 3, Sunday 4 and Wednesday 7 August 2013 at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton Road Station, Quainton, Buckinghamshire, HP22 4BY (trains run direct from Marylebone mainline station to Aylesbury Vale Parkway, with a free vintage shuttle bus service from there to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre). Tickets cost between £7-£12 with family and advance booking discounts available.
