Meatopia, A Huge Barbecue At Wapping's Tobacco Dock

What you won't see at Meatopia

All the meat you'll ever want to eat is going to be cooked up at Wapping's superannuated shopping mall, Tobacco Dock, in September.

Meatopia is a huge BBQ that takes place in New York City each year. During the inaugural London event on 7 September, over a tonne of meat will be grilled, broiled or flambéed. To say this flies in the face of concerns about health and the deleterious effects of cattle rearing is obvious; fret about that diet and your carbon footprint another day.

Despite the North American origins this is going to be a mostly British affair, with local chefs including Neil Rankin, Fergus Henderson (St John's), Sam& Sam Clark (Moro), Tom Adams (Pitt Cue Co) and Gizzi Erskine taking part, alongside a few US chefs; there will be 25 in total. Each will cook a tasting dish, using meat sourced from the UK, of which you can eat as much as you like.  There will also be lots of live music, butchery demos, street theatre and other events taking place.

A standard ticket for £45 plus booking fee gets you entry and tokens for two dishes and two drinks; further eating or imbibement will require another trip to the wallet. There are also pricier options with more tokens for those who want it. Expensive, perhaps, but then again given the calibre of cooks involved not unreasonably so.

Meatopia is on Saturday 7 September 2013 at Tobacco Dock, Wapping, E1W 2SF. Buy tickets here.
