A single beam of light may be a simple concept but it's a powerful symbol. From a ray of sunshine illuminating Christ in a Renaissance painting to films where victims are isolated in a spotlight before an alien abduction.

Yet is also stands out in everyday occurrences such as when a sliver of light penetrates a gloomy room and particles of dust seem to dance in the ray of sunlight. These artistic qualities of light have not been overlooked by the art world, as can be seen in the massively popular Light Show exhibition at the Hayward Gallery.

In a similar vein, One Beam Of Light was a global photographic project set up by Light Collective and Havells-Sylvania Concord's to "create a collection of stunning and inspirational images that start with a single source of light". They received hundreds of entries and these have been eventually whittled down to a final 30 which will be on display at the ICA for one week only.

We've been privy to all of the images and can confirm there are some excellent works on display, from subtle silhouettes to breathtaking inventiveness in the use of light.

One Beam Of Light is on at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH from 16-20 April. Admission is free.
