From Tomorrow: See Warhol Films At The ICA

Dodge the weather at the ICA's Warhol on Film "season" this weekend. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can catch the UK premieres of three rare Warhol films, newly restored by The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Back in the mid-60s, artist Warhol embraced work in film and video. He made his first films with a Bolex camera in 1963 and began experimenting with video as early as 1965, working out of a silver-painted and foil-draped studio nicknamed The Factory, located at 231 East 47th Street, New York.

The films Warhol made in the 1960s are among the most significant works in the career of this prolific artist. The ICA is screening a selection:

  • Chelsea Girls (1966) starring Ondine, Gerard Malanga, Ingrid Superstar and Nico, with music by The Velvet Underground, is showing on Friday at 7pm. £8 / £7 concessions / £6 ICA Members
  • Sleep (1963) is showing on Saturday from 12pm. Sleep is Warhol's first black-and-white film which he made in 1963. Lasting for six hours, the film focuses on the poet John Giorno asleep in his apartment. Free
  • Vinyl (1965), showing Sunday, is an adaptation of Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, starring Gerard Malanga and Edie Sedgwick with music from The Kinks and The Stones. 7pm; £8 / £7 concessions / £6 ICA Members

Warhol on Film runs from 5 to 7 April 2013 at Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London, SW1Y 5AH. Book online at ica.org.uk or call the box office on 020 7930 3647.
