Originally written by Maxim Gorky, director Howard Davies now stages this darkly comic Russian classic adapted by Andrew Upton, following their acclaimed collaborations on The Cherry Orchard, Philistines and the Olivier Award-winning The White Guard.
Russia may be rolling towards revolution, but the new middle class are oblivious. Instead they flirt and flounder, blind to their impending annihilation.
Protasov wants only to immerse himself in scientific experiments – so much so that he’s blind to romantic advances and his friends’ philandering, let alone the starving mob at his gates. Only Liza, nervous and sickly, feels the peasants’ suffering and senses that their own privileged world may be in jeopardy.
