Random London Fact of the Day
Next time you're heading through the northern fringes of the City, look out for this seemingly anonymous tower block on Bunhill Row. This is Braithwaite House. Here, in their mother's flat, the Kray twins tasted their last true breath of freedom. On the morning of 8 May 1968, police stormed the building, arresting the gangsters and their older brother Charlie. After a lengthy trial at the Old Bailey, the pair were locked up for life, only emerging in public to attend funerals (under guard) and, in Reggie's case, a release to hospital on compassionate grounds, for his terminal battle with cancer.
Good Cause of the Day
The Winnicott Foundation is an independent charity that supports the premature and sick baby units at St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte’s Hospital near Wormwood Scrubs. The neonatal units, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, care for around 900 babies a year, some born as early as 23 weeks (17 weeks premature). The charity raises money to provide equipment not available on the NHS, support families and provide developmental care for the babies. If you'd like to help, they have several fundraising activities coming up, including places in the Brighton Marathon (14 April) and the British 10k London run (14 July).
