The Barons Cock Line: Alternative Names For London’s Tubes

A ride on the Belsize Elephant line?

The Bakerloo Line was famously given its name by a newspaper columnist, who thought the official appellation of ‘Baker Street and Waterloo Railway’ might be a bit of a mouthful. The cunning contraction of Baker Street and Waterloo into Bakerloo quickly caught on, and eventually became the official name. Many decades later, what became the Victoria Line might have been called the Viking Line using a similar shortening of Victoria and King’s Cross.

So, your thought experiment for the day. What names, amusing or otherwise, might be given to other lines on the network, by mixing two stations from that line (they don’t have to be termini)?

To get you started, here are a few that occurred to us.

  • Barons Cock Line (Piccadilly Line, Barons Court and Cockfosters)
  • Belsize Elephant Line (Northern Line, Belsize Park and Elephant and Castle)
  • WaterWater Line (Jubilee Line, Waterloo and Canada Water)
  • BarkingRaven Line (District Line, Barking and Ravenscourt Park)
  • RuisBois Line — to combine the two most mispronounced stations (Central Line, Ruislip Gardens and Theydon Bois)

Now it’s your turn…

The Bank & Bush Line (Central). And slightly off topic, I always refer to Green Park & Finsbury Park as Pic & Vic stations

As I said elsewhere, Wimbledon to Edgware Road should be the Wimbleware Line. not just part of the District.

With the proposed Northern Line extension, naming the two resulting lines will give rise to this for real. I suggest Isis and Osiris (gods of life and death), with the Isis line being White (her colour, and the mirror of the current black). Id nominate Bank branch as Black – it has Moorgate, Angel (death), Burnt Oak and Bank itself (ha ha), but then Angels are usually white, as are Elephants. Conversely Charing Cross sounds ‘black’, but it runs through through the pulsing heart of the city – Leicester Square, so Isis.

Also Metropolitan Line could be Cheshpool (or Ninezones)

Cockport Line for Piccadilly, anyone? Or Cockbridge? Basically anything with the word cock to make us giggle?

Toot Town and Morning Loo after parts of the Northern line as well.

    Love the Wimbleware suggestion.

On a slightly related note to Marc’s comment above, I’d be up for having the Northern Line be split into two separate lines. Might be a bit less confusing than having them only share three stations outside all the other bits past Kennington. That’s as many as the Jubilee shares with the Metropolitan line. But then again I don’t use it much, so people in Tufnell Park and Stockwell may disagree.

Either PadChapel or Bardington instead of Hammersmith & City

    • Joe Lynch

Although PadChapel also works for Crossrail so the ambiguity could be confusing
