Club Watch: Hieroglyphic Being @ Basing House

Bleed continue to put on the most exciting frontier sounds with their Saturday show at Basing House. Wildly imaginative — two of America's finest show just how much dance music exploration lies ahead of us.

Jetting in from Chicago is the mighty Jamal Moss, better known as Hieroglyphic Being — the shadowy presence lurking in clubland's darker corners. The man behind the revered Mathematics label has explored his muse across a scattered discography, while making few concessions to dance-floor accessibility. Tracks like the thundering "The Lost Transmission" below show he can rock a room if in the mood, but in a blown-out, raw manner fans of Actress will no doubt enjoy. His epic sets offer a tour of his influences, from industrial to acid, techno to tribal — expect a musical schooling.

In support is San Francisco's Holly Herndon playing her second ever London show and offering an equally left-field approach to dance music's possibilities. Overlooked with a release late last year, her debut album "Movement" showed  femininity in dance music amounts to more than sped up r'n'b samples. The oiled torsos in the video for Movements tidily encapsulate the sensual element she brings to her electronic creations. Here she adds breathy, Julia Holter-esque vocal melodies to a shaking acid thud. With the two artists tonight promising to record together this year, don't be surprised if a collaboration occurs tonight...
