Things to do for a fiver or less this week.

Monday 25 February

TRANSVESTISM: Neil McKenna talks about Victorian cross-dressing at Islington Central Library. Free, grab a ticket on 0207 527 6963, starts 6pm.

Tuesday 26 February

BRANCHING OUT: The LSE Space for Thought Literary Festival begins today with a whole range of impressive speakers and panels. Tickets for all events are free but you must reserve them. Runs until Saturday.

Wednesday 27 February

TRAVELLING: The ICA Artists' Film Club looks at location, time and memory. Tickets £5 (free to members), prebook, starts 7pm.

Thursday 28 February

WHITECHAPEL MURDERER: London Fortean Society explores the making of the Jack the Ripper legend at The Bell, Middlesex Street E1. Entry £3/£2 concessions. Get there early if you want a seat, starts 8pm.

Friday 1 March

PHOTOGRAPHY: An exhibition marking the centenary of fashion photographer, Norman Parkinson, opens at the National Theatre with glamorous portraits and extraordinary shots from his entire career. Free entry, opens at 10am till late.

A CAPELLA: Hear All the King's Men sing a capella in the Southbank Centre. Free, just turn up, 5.30pm.

VOICES: Drop into the free, late night event at Wellcome Collection exploring the science behind the voice, and creating art and noise with it. All free, tickets for individual events available on the night, from 7-11pm.

Saturday 2 March

AWE: Barbican Weekender explores wonder through art and neuroscience with "two brainy days of dance, theatre, music and art for all ages". Full programme here, all activities free, runs all weekend.

CARDBOARD: Boarding Card, a new installation by cardboard sculptor, William Alexander, opens in the Electrician's Shop at Trinity Buoy Wharf. While you're there, visit the lighthouse, Container City (pictured) and the Faraday Effect. Boarding Card is free, just turn up, open Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm.

Sunday 3 March

GODLESSNESS: The third Sunday Assembly focuses on lending a hand and helping out in the community. There are two sittings, morning and afternoon at The Nave, St Paul's Road, N1. Free, just turn up, 11am and 1.30pm.
