Contemporary artists continue to innovate in the media they use to create their works, ranging from floppy disks to dollar bills. A few artists have turned to using their own bodies as part of their art and Sophie Derrick is one of them.

Derrick uses her face to create swirling expressionistic paintings, seamlessly blending herself into the background. The seeming tumult of the works contrasts with the precise stillness that is required to complete them.

Not content to simply photograph her painted face, she has also created videos that show her work as it progresses and this exhibition will be a mix of the two types. We're hopeful that the other videos will be as entertaining as 'Pixel" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen> ate my face'.

This show marks her residence at DegreeArt and we're certain she will continue to create new and inventive pieces during her stay there.

Artist in Residence: Sophie Derrick - Total Painting is on at DegreeArt's Execution Room, 12a Vyner Street, E2 9DG from 7 February to 16 March. Admission is free.
