What’s On In London Theatre: 29 January – 4 February

It’s official – Theatreland’s in rude health, according to this morning’s statistics, with both attendance and box office takings slightly up on the same numbers for 2011. Perhaps you'd like to join in the fun with one of our highlighted shows below:

THEATRE
Theatreland’s latest star turn is Rowan Atkinson who returns to the stage after an absence of nearly 25 years to appear in Quartermaine’s Terms at Wyndham’s Theatre. It’s the story of a 1960s EFL school, featuring the tragicomic lives of seven teachers.

Tomorrow, Harold Pinter’s tense play Old Times opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Rufus Sewell. From Friday, you can see the epic, multi-authored Feast at the Young Vic, taking you on a journey from 18th century Nigeria to the UK in 2013. Also opening on Friday is Anjin: The Shogun And The English Samurai at Sadler’s Wells. Performed in English and Japanese by an international cast, this is the story of the first Englishman to ever reach Japan, and is directed by the RSC’s Gregory Doran. Sounds intriguing. A new musical also comes to London's Soho Theatre on Friday: LIFT is a world premiere of a musical about love, life and lost set in a… London lift. Finally, opening on Monday is Our Country’s Good at the St James Theatre, a revival of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s Olivier Award winning play.

DANCE
Tomorrow, Tango Fire – Flames of Desire comes to the Peacock Theatre; a sizzling show to steam up your January from Argentina’s hottest dance company. On Thursday, Tatyana opens at the Barbican, a production by one of Brazil’s leading contemporary dance companies, set to an eclectic soundtrack featuring Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky and Prokofiev combined with contemporary music. From Monday, The Print Room in Notting Hill hosts an international dance premiere called FLOW, inspired by water. (Check out the trailer below.)

OPERA
Two big operas come to town this week. Choose between La Traviata at the London Coliseum from Saturday, and Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House from Monday.

LAST CHANCE
Thursday is your last chance to see The Mikado at the London Coliseum. Comedy act Rubberbandits closes at the Soho Theatre on Saturday; as does The Silence of The Sea at the Trafalgar Studios.

Finally, Stephen Fry / Mark Rylance fans take note: this weekend is the final fling for Twelfth Night and Richard III at the Apollo Theatre.
