What’s On In London Theatre 22-28 January

Our pick of the best theatre and opera events on offer on London’s stages this week. Plus a reminder about those shows which are closing.

THEATRE
Tonight’s big West End opening is The Judas Kiss, starring Freddie Fox and Rupert Everett at the Duke of York’s Theatre. We’ll let you know our verdict before the end of the week.

There are stars on stage at the Hampstead Theatre too, as Di and Viv and Rose opens, with Tamzin Outhwaite, Anna Maxwell Martin and Gina McKee as the eponymous heroines. Over at the Gate, you can see a fiercely honest story of modern America, Gruesome Playground Injuries, by Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph. From Friday, you can see a chilling new stage adaptation of The Turn of the Screw at the Almeida Theatre starring Gemma Jones as Mrs Grose. Finally on Monday, Simon Stephens’ new drama Port opens at the National Theatre. It’s the story of a 13-year period in the life a Stockport teenager, Rachel, and her battles to improve her life.

OPERA
See The Minotaur at the Royal Opera House this week. This is Harrison Birtwistle’s reworking of the ancient myth, back in London following its premiere at the ROH in 2008. (See below for a taster.) Or, for a very different opera experience, try L’Orfeo by Silent Opera at Trinity Buoy Wharf from tomorrow: it’s all about an immersive experience through wireless headphones and site specific surroundings, apparently. And one audience member will "choose between Death or Glory" at the end of the night.

KIDS THEATRE
Don’t miss Tales From The Shed – hugely popular interactive theatre shows for Chickenshed theatre’s youngest audiences: those between 0 and 7 years old at Chickenshed from Friday.

LAST CHANCE
Saturday is your last chance to see Goodnight Mister Tom at the Phoenix Theatre; Hansel And Gretel at the National; Uncle Vanya at the Vaudeville Theatre; Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty at Sadler’s Wells; and Cinderella at the St James Theatre.
