Hugh Elphick is a London-based photographer who specialises in capturing the social themes of our city. A few years back, he embarked on the Soho Project, photographing shop workers in their place of employment.
This series of images was taken towards the end of 2009 and attempts to document the varied mix and character of the small businesses and the people working in Soho. The series also includes a few global businesses and chains such as Pret A Manger and New Era, to allow the viewer to consider the possible threat that larger, more homogeneous businesses pose to the identity and character of Soho.
Since this project was undertaken, three of the independent businesses have shut down.
You can contact Hugh and order prints of his photographs through his web site.
