Alter Ego Finals @ Hackney Empire

Hackney is on the hunt for its next star. And if the roll call of all the famous artists and musicians it's produced is not enough to convince you that's meant literally, then well, you're going to have to see things for yourself.

Alter Ego is the final showcase and part of a rigorous process to find east London’s artistic prodigy.

Taking place this Friday night (1 February) at Hackney Empire, nine acts in rap, singing, dance and even comedy - who have already made it through a tough selection process to even get to this stage – will compete to be crowned winner.

Hosted by Kat B (MTV Base), in addition to the whittled down nine there will be performances from Krept and Konan and and MC Paigey Cakey.

Around 50 performers aged between 13 and 21 vied for the chance to perform in the final and their entries, some posted as videos on the Discover Young Hackney website, are at times amazing.

One beautiful girl vocalist delivers a rendition of Beyonce’s Sweet Dreams – and sounds practically better than the great B herself. Testament to the tough selection process and the stellar talent we’re likely to see at this launch event for Discover Young Hackney festival, she didn't even make it to the grand finale on Friday.

Winner of Friday’s showdown (which last year was 17 year old dancer Tolu 'The Tower' Okanlawon) will be awarded a year’s free membership to the Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School.

Tickets for Alter Ego finals, part of Discover Young Hackney free festival, on throughout February, cost £2 each (advanced) or £4 (on the door). To book advanced tickets call the Hackney box office on 020 8985 2424, or visit www.hackneyempire.co.uk
