Santa's Lap: Pop Up King's Cross Station

Every day until Christmas we will be pointing you in the direction of a London-inspired Christmas present that (with a bit of luck) you won’t already have on your list. Climb up onto our collective lap and we’ll see what we can move from our sack to your stockings…

2012 has seen King's Cross Station start to blossom from a pig-ugly shed to something close to what a modern train station should be: the new concourse with its beautiful, sweeping roof opened this year, and the horrible old green frontage started to come down a few weeks ago. So it's perfect timing for this book about the station's history.

Discovering King's Cross: A Pop-Up Book looks back over the full 160-year history with stylised illustrations by Lucy Dalzell and sections written by Michael Palin, Jay Merrick and Dan Cruickshank. But the pièce de résistance is in the centre, with a pop-up of the station as it will soon look, created by Corina Fletcher. While it's not the most informative tome on the railway ever written we think that makes it perfect for children; and it's gorgeous enough that we know plenty of adults who'd love to find this under the tree.

Discovering King's Cross: A Pop-Up Book is published by Cicada Books, hardback, RRP £17.95.
