Free & Cheap London Events: 3-9 December

A selection of things to do for a fiver or less this week.

Monday 3 December: Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards Daniel Simonsen is part of the line-up at the Camden Head tonight, with other comedians Suzi Ruffell, Gráinne Maguire, Pattie Brewster and Tania Edwards (8.30pm, £1).

Tuesday 4 December: Index on Censorship launches the latest issue of its magazine with a discussion about free speech online at the Free Word Centre. Richard Allan from Facebook, Gus Hosein from Privacy International and Kirsty Hughes of Index on Censorship are the speakers, and there's drinks and sushi for everyone. Tickets are free but register online (6.30pm).

Wednesday 5 December: War Horse author Michael Murpurgo is talking about his life and work and reading a new autobiographical short story at the National Theatre (6pm, £4 / £3).

Thursday 6 December: There's a lecture on – wait for it – the Cultural Narratives of Erotic Asphyxiation at St Bart's Hospital Pathology Museum and Gallery followed by a screening of four short films under the title of Extraordinary Eaters: Food, Foreign Bodies, and Medical Intervention. Tickets are free but need to be pre-ordered (6.30-8.30pm).

Friday 7 December: If you're free at lunchtime, catch a lecture about Saturnalia and the origins of Christmas at the British Museum from 1.15pm (free, but book ahead).

It's also Late at Tate Britain night, with music from Stella Polaris and lots of exhibits exploring the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites on contemporary culture. Plus an Etsy craft fair (6-10pm, free).

Saturday 8 December: The Chocolate Festival is back behind the Southbank Centre all weekend, with free tastings, talks and demonstrations from top chocolatiers (from 11am, free entry).

Sunday 9 December: Visit the final day of two weekend markets: the Crafty Fox Market brings handmade and vintage crafts, workshops and The Tea's Knees tearooms to the Dogstar in Brixton (11am-5pm, free entry), or browse the artists' studios at Eel Pie Island (10.30am-6.30pm, free entry).
