Dance Around London: January 2013

January means a fresh calendar, which absolutely applies to dance this month, with a number of platforms for emerging artists erupting across London. Each contain a number of short works, offer an exciting gamble on quality, are a melting pot of dance and performance styles and will probably surprise you. It begins with The Place's Resolution! Festival, 8 January - 15 February, tickets £14 (read our season preview here). More's at stake for the artists competing in Chisenhale Dance Space's Dance and the Homemade  on 16 January. Finally Lilyan Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells hosts Wildcard on 17-18 January, tickets £15.

For the sheer beauty of the costumes alone it's worth seeing The Sleeping Beauty by English National Ballet, where Kenneth MacMillan's choreography sparkles to Tchaikovsky's timeless music (pictured). Catch it between 9-19 January at London Coliseum, tickets £10- £67.

This one's been on for quite a while, but we thought we'd wait until the crowds had died down a bit. However, looks like they might not, especially with only a few dates of dance punctuating the art installation left. Battle the crowds to see Wayne McGregor's Random Dance on 20 January or 24 February at The Rain Room (read our review here). Exhibition open until Feb 24 2013, Barbican Centre, free.

The London Mime Festival offers an array of silent delights. If you can take the desperation, desolation and defiance you'll be rewarded by Les Ballets C de la B's The Old King, from 21- 23 January at the Linbury Studio Theatre, tickets £7- £17. Zimmermann and de Perrot's Hans was Heiri features a house that tumbles, like a carousel, with performers precariously playing out the circus of life inside. See it from 23- 26 January at Barbican Centre, tickets £16- £30.

Set in an enormous wooden tree sculpture that the dancers effortlessly scale, Tatyana, by Companhia de Danca Deborah Colker is inspired by Pushkin's classic Russian novel Eugine Onegin, and Pushkin enters the world of his four fictional characters for some old-time Russian drama; lust, duels, rejection and passion. Check out the video below. Runs 31 January - 9 February at Barbican Centre, tickets £16- £30.
