Charles Rowbotham was one of the stars of the recent A view of Marylebone exhibition and he walked away with second prize. To build on this success he is having another show in Richmond that will feature 15 paintings of his favourite muse – the City of London. Also on display will be works by fellow London painter Sherree Valentine Daines.
As the title of the exhibition suggests, the artists are keen to capture the different faces of London — in the rain, on a sunny day, lit up at night and in the early morning light. The difference is most apparent in Rowbotham’s sunny Piccadilly, where locals are strolling idly by, which contrasts with a downpour where commuters are running across the road to get home in a hurry. The glare of street lighting in the latter reminded us of one of our favourite works — Pissarro’s Boulevard Montmartre at Night.
At this exhibition, visitors can expect many more paintings that capture the energy of famous locations in our city.
London Rain or Shine is on display at Whitewall Gallery, 18 Hill Street, Richmond, TW9 1TN from 8 – 15 December. Entrance is free.
