Things To Do In London Today: 27 November 2012

CHARITY ART: The National AIDS Trust is a quarter century old this year. To mark the anniversary and to coincide with World AIDS Day (1 December), the charity is organising an art exhibition at City Hall plus an online auction. Contributors include artists such as Maggie Hambling and celebrities including Annie Lennox and Gok Wan. Free, just turn up, 8am-6pm

GIVE BLOOD: Donate blood today at the Salvation Army HQ on Queen Victoria Street in the City. 9.30am-11am and 12.15-4.15pm

ART: A View of Marylebone, 30 paintings covering the area, goes on show at Thompson's Gallery, New Cavendish Street from today until 22 December. Free, just turn up, 10am-6pm

NEW ART: Bloomberg New Contemporaries, a new art exhibition at the ICA, displays work by some of the best emerging artists from UK art schools. Free, just turn up, 11am-11pm

ARCHITECTURE: The final Tuesday of the month is always open evening at RIBA on Portland Place. Tonight’s event is themed around colour and light in architecture, with talks, tours and exhibitions. Free, just turn up, 6-10pm

HISTORY: Isaac Newton is noted for many things, but as an historian? Apparently, the great man produced a work that challenged conventional thinking on the history of ancient civilisations. Mordechai Feingold and Jed Buchwald reveal all at the Royal Society. Free, just turn up, 6.30pm

POLAR EXPLORATION AND FREE WHISKY: A slightly odd, but welcome combination, as polar explorers Dr Ian Davis and Inge Solheim talk about their Arctic adventures, followed by a whisky tasting. No huskies needed, just get down to the Garrison public house in Bermondsey. Free, prebook, 7pm

MUSIC: A few tickets are still available to see Bobby Womack at Kentish Town Forum, with Damon Albarn as special guest. £37.25, prebook, 7pm

WHISKY TREE: More spirit-fuelled fun in Covent Garden, where Jack Daniels build an 8-metre-tall Christmas tree from spent barrels. You'll find it in the East Piazza (or East Pizza as Time Out describes it). Free, just turn up

PARTY: Make Noise is a party night with a conscience – take along a small electronic item to hand in at the door for recycling and you get in free at Corsica Studios, Elephant & Castle. Free, just turn up, 7pm-1am

WILLIAM BLAKE: Celebrate the old oddball's birthday with a special concert of classical and pop music at St James's Piccadilly. Ray Davies himself will be there. £15, just turn up, 7.30pm

Random London Fact of the Day

This obelisk and unusual road surface south of Finsbury Circus mark the site of an old subterranean Victorian toilet.  The obelisk was installed in 1999 as a ventilation shaft for an underground gas storage tank, which presumably occupies the former toilet space. The monument commemorates architect George Dance the Younger, who laid out the Finsbury estates. Thanks to Sarah McCabe for the tip.
