Covent Garden might have an advent calendar made from 600,000 LEGO bricks, but up the posher end of town they’ve got some art made from stained glass and gems.
Chris Chamberlain’s Jewel of the Universe mosaic goes on show at ROA Gallery on Pall Mall from 4-15 December. The glorious monster contains some 330,000 components, including stained glass, LEDs, and 260 carats of gemstones representing the cities of the world.
Rubies and emeralds indicate spiritual centres such as Jerusalem and Mecca and thousands of turquoise-coloured pieces, each the size of a grain of rice, depict the great lakes and rivers of the world such as the Nile, Amazon, Yangtze, Mississippi and Ganges.
The whole piece measures 3.18m x 2.18m and took 27 months to create.
