Londonist Underground: Draw Subterranean London And Get Exhibited

Everyone's fascinated by the secret realms beneath the city's streets. Sewers, rivers, catacombs, service tunnels, railways...it's a mysterious, unknowable tangle that fires the imagination. We're teaming up with Bishopsgate Institute to help visualise these buried spaces as part of their upcoming Underground London series...and we need your ideas.

We'd like you to imagine an underground space beneath London, and then put it down on paper...or take a photograph of a real location. A few ideas:

  • Bring one or more of London's buried rivers to life
  • Draw your fantasy Underground line over a surface map of London
  • Paint a cut-away representation of your home Tube station.
  • Imagine a set of caves and chambers beneath the West End...what creatures inhabit them?
  • Grab a photo from a secret cellar or other space.

Be as imaginative and inventive as you like, or else stick to the factual and map out or photograph something that really exists. It's up to you.

The winning entries will be displayed at Bishopsgate Institute from January through till March 2013. Winners will be chosen based on the novelty of idea as much as artistic merit...so don't worry if you're rubbish at drawing. So long as you've got an interesting idea, you're in with a good chance.

The exhibition will form part of a Bishopsgate Institute's series which marks 150 years of the London Underground in 2013. Look out for its mouthwatering programme of talks and events themed around not just the tube but underground places, cultures and ideas, which we'll cover in more detail soon — or check www.bishopsgate.org.uk from 9 January 2013.

To enter the Londonist Underground competition, email a scan or photograph of your work to matt@londonist.com by 4 January 2013.
