Next weekend the UK Chilli Standoff arrives at The Oval, Hackney. Boasting eight chefs each cooking their own unique chilli, alongside tequilas and Texan beer (plus ice cream for that inevitable chilli overdose) the Standoff will be presided over by guest judge John Torode, of Masterchef. Tickets cost £40, which includes all eight chillis, a couple of beers, a cocktail and an ice cream — and the chance of a having a Johnny Cash-voiced coyote climb into your head.
Having gored our way through burgers and hot dogs, the next slab of Americana to be masticated by London's foodie scene is fried chicken. Highly anticipated Wishbone, at Brixton Village, finally opens its doors next Tuesday (12pm-6pm)...
... not that we've got over the burger fetish, by any means. In what will be (by our count) the 34,037th pop-up burger joint to go legit, Patty & Bun (who popped up at The Endurance earlier in the summer) will move into the old Stockpot premises on James Street. Opening date is late November.
On Saturday 10 November, Brixton Market's Chillbox, billed by its PR-wallahs as "the UK's first ever frozen Greek yoghurt concept" (stay with us, please) will be giving away free samples between 1pm and 3pm.
Finally, we were impressed by our visit to MASH, the new Danish steak restaurant, earlier this week, although the prices were predictably high; fortunately the soft launch lasts until this Sunday, which means you'll get 50% off the food bill.
