We've known it was coming for a while, but images of the new indoor theatre at Shakespeare's Globe have been released, as well as the name: it will be known as The Sam Wanamaker Theatre, and allow the Globe to stage performances year round.

If you know your Globe history you'll know Wanamaker was the driving force behind getting the Globe theatre built, so it's extremely fitting that the new space will bear his name. The design is Jacobean, based on drawings by Inigo Jones protégé John Webb, and will seat 340 people in two tiers of galleries and a pit. (For comparison, the Donmar Warehouse has a capacity of around 250, the Almeida Theatre about 325.) It will primarily be lit by candles, and we're getting a bit misty-eyed just imagining it. God only knows how we'll react when it opens in January 2014.

The project still needs £1m to become a reality so if you feel like donating a few pounds and becoming a part of theatrical history, visit the Shakespeare's Globe website.
