What's On In London Theatre: 2-8 October

Highlights from London’s theatrical calendar for the next seven days (plus a head’s up about those shows that are closing…)

DANCE
Star of the Olympics Opening Ceremony Akram Khan is at Sadler’s Wells this week, presenting his autobiographic work DESH (meaning homeland) for a limited run. This is one of London's hottest tickets this week: watch the extraordinary video clip here for a taster of what you're probably going to miss from this already. From Monday, you can see some classical ballet with Swan Lake opening at the Royal Opera House.

OPERA
From tonight, you can see Handel’s Julius Caesar performed by the ENO for the first time since 1979 at the London Coliseum. Our other opera recommendation is Puccini’s Tosca at the King’s Head Theatre presented by OperaUpClose in association with Malmo Opera.

THEATRE
Ancient Rome is also en vogue at the Donmar Warehouse, as a new version of Berenice (that’s Titus’s lover) by Alan Hollinghurst starring Anne-Marie Duff opens tonight. Also opening tonight is Pericles at the Rose Theatre Bankside; Sherlock Holmes – A Study in Fear at the Greenwich Theatre and A Life, about a civil servant in small-town Ireland, at the Finborough Theatre.

Our Boys opens at the Duchess Theatre tomorrow, starring Arthur Darvill and Laurence Fox, as does Call Me Madam at the Union Theatre – a musical about American foreign policy spun around an Irving Berlin score. Fireface opens at the Young Vic on Thursday, as does the darkly humorous Scenes From An Execution starring Fiona Shaw at the National Theatre. Also opening on Thursday is Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington, in London following a sparkling summer at the Edinburgh Festival.

Finally, we really like the look of this at Jacksons Lane, but it rather defies categorisation: Anton’s Uncles by Theatre Movement Bazarr plays for just two nights on Friday and Saturday this week. See a taster below.

LAST CHANCE
Tomorrow is your last chance to see Julietta at the London Coliseum.

On Saturday, it’s the last performance of Choir Boy at the Royal Court; Ghost The Musical at the Piccadilly Theatre; Baggage at the Arts Theatre; What You Will at the Apollo Theatre; and Barbershopera at the Trafalgar Studios. Enjoy.
