A-Z Pubcrawl: Where Are The Best Pubs In Hampstead And Highgate?

Recommend a good pub or bar in Hampstead or Highgate, then join us on a crawl round the top four.

For part H of our two-year journey around London’s pubs, we’re trying something a little different. The letter H offers an embarrassment of riches for the good-pub seeker: Holborn, Hoxton, Hammersmith, Hamsptead, Highgate, Hornsey, Highbury, Holloway…Harlesden? So we’re going to combine two of the booziest together and seek the best pubs in both Hampstead and Highgate.

Here’s how to play:

  1. Let us know (in the comments, on Facebook, or by tweeting #bestHampsteadPub or #bestHighgatePub) your favourite pubs in the area.
  2. We’ll tally up the votes in a few days.
  3. We’ll then arrange a weekend pub crawl later this month around the four most popular choices — two from Hampstead, two from Highgate, with a late afternoon walk across Hampstead Heath between them. You’re welcome to join us.
  4. You can nominate anywhere in the two areas. How far ‘Hampstead’ and ‘Highgate’ extend is entirely up to you.
  5. By ‘pubs’, we’re using a shorthand — you can also vote for bars.
  6. You can nominate more than one place. All nominations count as one vote, whether you rank them or not. Likes on Facebook and retweets of someone else’s vote are also counted as new votes.
  7. Venues should be open to the public with no pre-booking, entry fee or membership required.

So, where shall we go?

The Stag and The Junction Tavern

    The Gatehouse – yes it’s a Wetherspoons, but it’s a lovely one.

In Highgate, the Prince of Wales and the Wrestlers

For Hampstead I’d pick the Holly Bush and the Stag. For Highgate, the Wrestlers.

    The stag and the spaniards!

The Wrestlers, The Angel or The Woodman in Highgate. Or for a more old skool option, The Prince of Wales. The Bull for tip top food. Oh, all of them, basically.

    The Holly Bush for sure

The Wrestlers is easily the best pub in London, as well as in Highgate!

Thing with the Holly Bush is they’ve thrown us off a table (that we’d been on for hours) as someone had reserved it – not cool. The Southampton Arms is pretty much Hampstead…if not, the Spaniard’s Inn.

I went on a Highgate pub crawl last Christmas – its definitely worth doing: start in Archway (the Despard and then head up Highgate Hill and turn right at the weatherspoons along North road…

Anyway The Depard on Archway Road (i know is more Archway) is my favourite pub in Highgate. The Flask in Highgate is fantastic in the summer in the garden and the Flask in Hampstead is brilliant in the winter

The Old White Bear in hampstead is definitely the best especially because not many people know about it. The food there is also amazing. The Holly Bush and Flask tend to be packed with tourists and visitors as does the Freemasons Arms which is lovely in the summer because it has a great garden.

The Bull and Last is amazing. I have to call ahead to book tables AND scotch eggs because they are so good they never last on teh weekends

The Victoria down North Hill is a beautiful little hideaway off the beaten track, but they’re all good..

So many great pubs in Hampstead! If I had to pick two, they’d be The Stag and The Old White Bear.

The Flask in Highgate and the Flask in Hampstead. Yes the Holly Bush is old, lovely and authentic but too busy and there’s never a table available!

  • Gobo

    Hell yeah! So many pubs!

I do love the Red Lion and Sun in Highgate!
