Things To Do In London Today: 25 September 2012

A new daily post, highlighting the best things to do around town today (which aren't already booked up). We welcome additions in the comments.

Events

  • TIME OUT: The weekly listings mag goes free. Pick up your gratis copy from likely locations around central London. From 8am
  • LEGO: Help build the former Athletes' Village and Queen Elizabeth Park from tiny bricks, from today until 1 October. All day
  • LITERATURE: Today's your last chance to catch the Writing Britain exhibition at the British Library. 10am-8pm
  • ARCHITECTURE: RIBA on Portland Place opens late tonight, for an evening looking at the future of the Olympic Park, and other celebratory projects "after they were famous". It's free and you can drop in any time 6-10pm.
  • POLITICS/MUCIC HALL: Dominic West (The Wire) and John Major (um, the former Prime Minister) form an unlikely pairing at the Royal Geographical Society, where they'll discuss the history of British music hall. The duo will then hang about in the bar afterwards to answer a few questions. This is a real event. 7pm
  • HISTORY: Tonight's History in the Pub is all about fires of London. Includes talks, music, Q&A, a history quiz and an open mic session, hosted by Londonist M@. 7pm start
  • FOOD: The Scotch Egg Challenge 2012 concludes at the wonderful Ship pub in Wandsworth. 25 competitors will attempt to impress a fancy judging panel (including Tom Parker Bowles and Michelin starred chef Shaun Hill), as well as the audience. Just turn up. 7pm
  • SEX: Simon Watt off of Inside Nature's Giants describes the weirdest sexual practices in the natural world. He'll be verbally ejaculating at the Cittie of Yorke pub in Holborn as part of the Cosy Science evening. 7pm start, just turn up
  • COMEDY: The Amused Moose Comedy Awards Showcase starts at Soho Theatre, with a series of performances from emerging comedy talent. 7.30pm
  • LITERATURE: Will Self talks about his new book, the appropriately named Umbrella, at Clapham Books. It's free and there's no need to book. 7.30pm
  • FILM: Feeling retro? Catch a screening of the Neverending Story, courtesy of our friends at Domestic Sluttery, with cocktails and stuff, at the Prince Charles Cinema. 8.30pm
  • GET WET IN THE RAIN: It's the new craze. All day

Random Fact of the Day

The Elfin Oak in Kensington Gardens is over 900 years old, and originally grew in Richmond Park. Its tiny magical figures were carved in 1928-30 by Ivor Innes. Pink Floyd fans might know the tree from the inside cover of Ummagumma.

Weather

You can probably guess. Go on. Yes! Rain. We estimate several billion droplets will fall on the capital, mostly wherever you live or work. Some sunny spells are forecast, but with the scarcity of non-sarcastic smiles on Eastenders. Take a brolly, or preferably buy one. BBC Weather.
