Hackney Film Festival returns to the titular borough this weekend, with three days of homegrown talent. Now in its third year, the Festival specialises in features created in Hackney itself. It also has its own trailer:
Day 1, on Friday 7 September at the New Empowering Church, opens with an audio-visual collaboration between the Festival and the Live Cinema Foundation, a local organisation promoting new digital culture. The main act is the Light Surgeons, whose work will be familiar to anyone who's visited the Museum of London — their digital vision of London over 24 hours enlivens the basement cafe. Various VJs, DJs and performers complete the bill.
Saturday begins at the Rio Cinema in Dalston for a programme of short films: from documentary to sci-fi to stop-motion animation. In the evening, the action transfers to nearby Cafe OTO, where a series of sets will dabble in 'expanded cinema' — basically, mixing film with other media and performances to create something new.
Sunday moves to Hackney Picturehouse where a free afternoon event will shine up some of the best emerging short-film makers from the borough. The Festival closes in the evening with a screening of Andrew Kötting and Iain Sinclair's new film Swandown, preceded by further short films.
