English Heritage is the national body charged with looking after the country's historic buildings, structures and sites. It just published the London List, a guide to the capital's treasures listed in 2011.
The PDF guide is a fascinating read. It includes over 100 sites, across 23 London boroughs and the City of London. Significantly more than half of the entries are from the 20th Century, including the headline-grabbing listing of the Lloyd's Building, and 19 Tube stations. Victorian buildings include the Strand Union workhouse with connections to Charles Dickens, recently protected from redevelopment thanks to a vigorous local campaign, and Union Chapel in Islington, familiar venue for many a gig.
It's not all about buildings. Green Park has been upgraded to Grade II*, while many graves and memorials get protected status for the first time. The list also includes the Fleet Murals on Farringdon Road, and three K6 telephone boxes in Bloomsbury.
