Art Preview: Art Of Chess @ Saatchi Gallery

Art Preview: Art Of Chess @ Saatchi Gallery

Chess is one of the oldest games, yet it is still played by millions worldwide and considered by many to be the ultimate test of strategy. There are many different versions of chess sets, ranging from hand carved marble editions to the novelty sets featuring characters from the Simpsons and Lord of the Rings (we're certain that a Game of Thrones version is not far off).

In contrast to the kitschy versions, 16 leading artists were asked to create a chess set and they are displayed together for the first time at the Saatchi gallery. Each artist has created a version in their own inimitable style. Yayoi Kusama's version is replete with her favoured polka dot pattern and Damien Hirst's set features medicine bottles for pieces.

This exhibition is the result of many creative minds being given artistic licence to interpret a classic game. Expect each artist to have firmly stamped their unique signature on their chess sets.

The Art of Chess is on at the Saatchi Gallery until 3 October. Entrance is free.

Also on display in the Saatchi Gallery until 23 September is Korean Eye.
