In an interview with the Independent, London Legacy Development Corporation chairman Daniel Moylan reveals that he is lobbying hard to keep the Orbit tower open during the 18-month redevelopment of the Olympic Park.
According to Moylan:
[Access] would be by bus, and you would have to pre-book, as it will be a building site. But I think it would be tremendously advantageous if we could get local people in... They'd see that there really is activity behind the hoardings.
Like many a politician, Moylan is keen to bottle the 'Olympic spirit' (something that others have been doing in a more literal fashion) and is concerned that, with the Park fenced off from prying eyes for a planned 18 months after the Paralympics, people may have long forgotten those brief, heady two weeks that enthralled the country. In fact it's all beginning to seem like a dream already...
We already have a rough idea of how the Queen Elizabeth Park will look, and London's chances at forming a lasting legacy from the fortnight-long cavalcade of sporting excellence are better than that of other host cities, but, as this collection of anecdotes about previous Olympic Parks suggests, there is plenty of work to do.
