Medal Map Shows Team GB Home Towns

Ordnance Survey has put together a map showing the birthplaces or homes of all the Team GB medal winners (click image to visit the navigable version).

While many of the medals have been won by Northerners and Midlanders, the map shows that London has also begot its own wealth of precious metallers. The capital’s golden stars include 10,000 metre hero Mo Farah, who grew up in Feltham and runs for Newham and Essex Beagles, and Pete Reid from the men’s coxless four, based out near Chiswick.

Dressage winner Charlotte Dujardin and equestrian jumper Ben Maher are both pinpointed to the extreme north of London in Enfield. Neither lives there, now, however.

The map also indicates six silver connections to the capital and six bronze.

For some reason, the Northern Irish rowing medallists Alan Campbell and the Chambers brothers are listed under Richmond and Maidenhead, respectively…

Yeah, I think OS are playing fast and loose with locations. Pinpoint can represent current home towns or birth places, or possibly where their clubs are located. It’s all a bit confusing to be honest.
