With its famous closed tube station, grand diplomatic buildings and the bright lights of the Waldorf Hotel and eponymous theatre, Aldwych is one of London's most evocative mini-areas. Its Anglo-Saxon name refers to an old trading town to the west of the city.

At the centre of Aldwych is Bush House, home of the World Service from 1941 until yesterday. The BBC doesn't own the building and its lease expires at the end of the year, when Bush House will be returned to its Japanese owners. It will be interesting to see who the next tenants will be.
