HMS Ocean Welcomes Tourists, Gives Them Guns And Stickers

HMS Ocean squeezed itself through the Thames Barrier (video of the practice run in May here) and opened its hatches to visitors on Sunday. The largest ship in the Fleet, Ocean is spending the Games as a handy heliport and slightly less handy barracks (as it can’t get close enough to dock to the riverside, it uses tenders to bring people aboard — fun for visitors, tiresome for regulars).

A games-time wave to all aboard from Londonist.

I really enjoyed my visit – it left me feeling moderately reassured.

I also have to laugh at the bloggers who have said that having the HMS Ocean moored next to Greenwich makes the ship itself a terrorist target. If they’d met the Royal Marines I did then I doubt they’d keep spouting that particular nonsense – I’m pretty sure that a Royal Marines sergeant could kill you with a moderately hard stare, never mind a machine gun. They are very scary guys!
