Film Preview: Portobello Pop-Up Cinema Under The Westway

If you've fallen out of love with going to the cinema since Britain fell in love with the multiplex, then the Portobello Pop-Up "microplex" cinema might prove the perfect antidote to your pain.

London's only cinema built around reclaimed and recycled materials is back this summer, with a programme of Lo-Fi cinema to delight and entertain you.

Films on offer include Derek Jarman's 1987 classic, Jubilee; Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire; the Adam Smith-directed The Chemical Brothers' Don't Think; and cult Brit classic Quadrophenia, with a very special introduction by the film's director, Franc Roddam. In addition, you can meet Heathcote Williams, hear Alexei Sayle introduce an evening of Polish cinema, and learn more about why Brit director Greg Hall's excellent films don't get shown in mainstream cinemas.

If you're not around this month, but like the sound of watching films under The Westway, look out for the Portobello Film Festival, planned for September.

Portobello Pop-Up Cinema is showing films from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 to 29 July, under the motorway at 274 Portobello Road, W10 5TY. Tickets are a suggested voluntary donation of £4 and are available on the night. Visit www.portobellopopup.com for more information.
