Union Warns More Bus Strikes To Come

More bus strikes are likely in the ongoing dispute over Olympics bonuses.

Staff from 17 bus companies took part in Friday’s strike. Unite wants £500 for drivers (the union has denied claims in the Evening Standard that it’s upped the demand to £600) to compensate for increased passenger numbers and general havoc during the Games. The Olympic Delivery Authority has offered £8.3m towards the bonus – but that was originally only available if Friday’s strike didn’t happen – which TfL say would allow a £500 bonus to any driver working in a garage “where one or more routes were affected by the 2012 Games”. Of all the bonuses awarded to transport workers, £500 is the smallest amount offered so far (BAA staff could earn as much as £1,200).

The general secretary of Unite, Len McCluskey, said yesterday that further strikes would happen unless a “fair and sensible” solution was found. For the moment though, Unite are holding their horses. Three bus companies were granted an injunction against their staff striking on Friday but the reasons behind that injunction haven’t been released yet; when they are, we’ll find out the union’s next move.

I really don’t understand the justification for bus drivers receiving extra money during the Olympics. Unite’s main arguments are that other companies that run parts of our public transport have given at least £500, so bus drivers should too, but that doesn’t make any sense to me. If someone who worked in my industry at a different company received a bonus, I wouldn’t demand one from my employer.

The idea that they should get extra money for working during a busy period doesn’t make sense to me either, lots of people have jobs where it’s busier at certain times of the year, they just put their heads down and get on with it.

It’s stuff like this that gives the union movement a really bad name, this isn’t standing up for fairness and preventing exploitation, it’s people extorting as much money as they can out of something because they can.

Their argument is that there will be more passengers boarding the busses this argument I find horrifically senseless!! Currently when a bus is fully overloaded does that increase the net energy the driver exerts to peddle the bus?? Or wait that increases the net energy they use in turning the steering wheel!!

Secondly since their shifts will still be the same; note it’s the number of busses that will be increased not the lengthy of driver shifts!! So they will be runnig the same number of hours and the same damn busses then I ask what the heck is the bonus for???

Greedy humans that’s what they all are!! Cashing in on the opportunity!! But seriously let the
Strike!! Their last strike barely affected anyone who knew they could use the tube and trains and DLR free
