For the last couple of weeks there’s been a video amnesty happening in Catford. Artist Paul Halliday is creating an art installation in the old Blockbuster store on Rushey Green, formed of ribbons and ribbons of tape freed from their plastic cases and rushing across the floor in a deluge. You can see it through the window, gently blown by fans and twinkling under lights. It looks rather beautiful.
There’s a serious motive behind the beauty. Tapescape, from performance company Platform 7, are asking people to drop off their old VHS tapes and recorders for recycling once the installation is over. And on Wednesday afternoon, three lecturers from Goldsmiths will be talking about planned obsolescence, the hidden politics of waste and packaging, and an informal recycling scheme in Paris.
If all this gets your environmentally friendly side twitching, National Recycle Week starts tomorrow. There’s events around London and advice on the website.
