Preview: The Night Shift - Simon Rattle Conducts OAE @ Royal Festival Hall

This is a sponsored post on behalf of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE).

This season's final Night Shift concert from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment is going to be huge. Here's why you should grab tickets for Sunday night's event now.

The Night Shift brings great classical music to new audiences in a laid-back setting without "dumbing down or hamming up the musical output".

Someone you'll have heard of is conducting this gig: curly haired Liverpudlian, Sir Simon Rattle makes his debut at the Night Shift wielding the baton over a full 90-piece OAE orchestra. Expect him to turn up in his jeans, possibly beer in hand.

They'll be playing two pieces by impressionistic composer, Claude Debussy: Prélude à l’après midi d’un faune, and La Mer. We are told: "In both of these pieces the orchestra acts like a painter's palette – the music is all about light, shade, texture and colour, with La Mer being an amazing depiction of the beauty and power of the ocean." Watch La Mer in rehearsal below.

Night Shift concerts have taken place in pubs; informal settings away from the perceived stuffiness of the concert hall. Whilst this Sunday night's concert takes place in the stunning Royal Festival Hall it's styled like a gig with a support act in the bar from 9pm. Take drinks to your seat and come and go as you please. Clap when the mood takes you and feel free to cough and sneeze without any danger of a ticking off.
