The annual motor show at Canary Wharf opened on Monday to some rather unfortunate weather. Luckily for London's car enthusiasts, there's plenty to look at inside while waiting for the rain to stop.

The event is playing host to the brand new Chrysler 300C, which goes on sale in the UK on 14 June. With a 236bhp 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel designed to be big on efficiency, refinement and power, it also keeps emissions low enough to comply with strict Euro 5 legislation. The safety gizmos on the car are pretty impressive — radar to modify cruise control if another car moves within range, blind spot monitoring, parking sensors and even collision warnings in case the driver approaches something in front too fast. Looks-wise, Chrysler describe it as an American Beauty, with crisp lines and a sporty low-to-the-ground appearance. In the same exhibition area outside Canada Square you'll also find Chrysler's competitors in solid, luxury motoring; Jaguar, Bentley, Mercedes and Volvo.

As always, the Motorexpo brings together a combination of the supercar, the off-road and the eco-drivers. In the lobby of One Canada Place, Aston Martins, Maseratis, Ferrarris, Lamborghinis and even a Dodge Challenger are surrounded by an enthusiastic picture-snapping crowd.

For those who prefer their cars older or with an Italian flavour, head over to the east and west Wintergardens where a display of classic motors includes the Jaguar E-Type and XJ220, a Ford GT and some rarer models such as a 1950 Tojeiro Bristol Sports Racer. A Lamborghini Reventon — one of only 20 ever made — available to purchase is for sale for a cool seven-figure sum. Over in the Italian zone, a Ferrari F40 sits alongside its much-admired older cousin, the Dino. For four-wheel drive fanatics, the Land Rover Discovery off-road challenge can be found in Montgomery Square and the Ecozone stars returning favourites, the Nissan LEAF, Tesla Roadster and Vauxhall Ampera.

The Race Room is back at the Jubilee Place shopping mall and open every day so visitors can test their inner racing driver without risk to life and limb (or car), while if you prefer to get behind a real wheel, BMW, Kia, Lexus, Mercedes, Nissan and Volvo are all offering test drives. Visit the Driveme section of the Motorexpo website to book your appointment. Don't forget your driving licence.

From Thursday to Saturday, the 1,000 mph world land speed record challenger, the Bloodhound SSC show car will be on display, so pop down and find out more about this feat of engineering.

The Canary Wharf Motorexpo's charity partner is UK Youth and the event runs from 11 to 17 June, opening between 10am and 6pm Monday to Saturday, then 11am to 5pm on Sunday. See the website for further details. Entry is free. Find Motorexpo on Facebook and Twitter.
