It can't be long before someone maps all the map exhibitions London has hosted in recent years. Here's another, and one that puts the 'art' back into 'cartography'.
Peter Mountford rips apart landscapes and maps and reassembles them in eye-catching and thought-provoking ways. Four examples are on show at Unit 3 Projects in Bow.
Postcards from the Edge, shown above, is a playful portrait of Great Britain. The coast of our island has been sheared off, chopped up into 308 pieces, digitally fiddled with, then redistributed round the edge of the work. Canvases of eight inland locations are placed in the centre.
Another piece, called A Squared and Reconfigured World, is a montage of maps and other media built from views of every point on Earth with longitude and latitude coordinates that are squares of whole numbers. Two other works take a central image (a Surrey landscape) and superimpose views from different vantage points and times.
All in all, a neat, inventive, even mathematical exhibition that, yet again, shows the versatility of the map as a subject of art.
