The loneliness of the long distance runner by Jon Spence
The loneliness of the long distance runner by Jon Spence

Over 37,500 people ran the London Marathon yesterday in unexpectedly fine weather. Records were broken, costumes were sweated through, PBs were bested and, as usual, there was stacks of support for the runners on London's streets. It's hoped that over £50m will have been raised for charities.

Londoner David Weir won the Elite Wheelchair race for an incredible sixth time, equalling Tanni-Grey Thompson’s Marathon win record. It's not only an awesome achievement for the Croydon-based athlete but also bodes well for the forthcoming Paralympics.

Tragically, one runner collapsed and died just yards from the finish line on Birdcage walk. Claire Squires had been running for the Samaritans. As a tribute, donations have been pouring in to her JustGiving page.

On official duty for the first time at a London Marathon, Prince Harry was on hand to give out the prizes and announce on camera to the BBC's Sue Barker that next year, William and Kate will be running in the name of their joint charity. At least, now he's said it on air, they might have to.

Read the official men and women's race report here.

Many thanks to Prad Patel, Massimo Usai, Richard Parmiter, Mikepaws, McTumshie once and twice, fabiolug, Mister Tuffney, Chris Kench, Bonnevillekid and Jon Spence for sharing their photographs in the Londonist Flickrpool.
