Big cats are majestic animals that should only look at home in the wild. Not so in Abigail Box's artworks where they can be seen asleep on an armchair in a garden or strolling past a swimming pool.
Though Box's portfolio is wider than just her big cat paintings, this show is focussed on her pieces that feature lions and tigers — with some owls and a cat in a parka thrown in for good measure.
The domestic settings and the relaxed postures of the big cats gives her art a surreal feel that's both pleasing to the eye and mildly amusing.
The Great Escape is on at Degree Art, 12a Vyner Street, E2 9DG until 29 April. Entrance is free.
