Details for the first New Cross & Deptford Free Film Festival have been announced, with 12 locations ranging from public parks, a community garden, a lorry container and the cells in an old police station.
The varied programme includes family blockbusters, documentaries and an Italian telling of the life of Jesus from 1964. It runs from April 27 to May 6.
Here are some highlights:
- Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry – a documentary about the dissident Chinese artist whose sunflower seeds carpeted Tate Modern in 2010 — is being shown at the Old Deptford Police Station as part of a weekend of human rights films.
- Bike-powered, outdoor screenings of the last instalment of Harry Potter and of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes in public playgrounds.
- Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, also outdoors, hosted by Cinetopia who promise a ‘magical setting’ and are encouraging fancy dress.
- An illustrated talk on 100 years of the moving image in New Cross and Deptford by historian Neil Gordon-Orr in the Big Red’s new lorry container venue.
- St Nicholas Church, with its pair of pair of grinning skull and crossbones welcoming visitors to the churchyard, is screening The Gospel According to St Matthew by Paolo Pasolini.
- South London aliens vs hoodies future cult classic Attack The Block is being shown at Release nightclub followed by DJ sets of dubstep, house, hip-hop, garage, grime and RnB.
It’s being run by Free Film Festivals, the people behind Peckham and Nunhead Free Film Festival, which takes place again this year, from September 13-23.
