Dance Around London: February 2012

It's not just the Olympics coming to London this year. For the first time British Dance Edition — which showcases British dance in different UK cities — is being produced in London. Work from contemporary dance heavyweights will be shown at Sadler’s Wells, The Place, Royal Opera House, Southbank Centre, Stratford Circus, Greenwich Dance and Laban Theatre, with public performances between 2-5 February. Our highlights include:

Wayne McGregor/Random Dance at Sadler's Wells: In McGregor’s technologically and physically articulate FAR, he delves further into his fascination with science and explores the controversial Age of Enlightenment (2-3 February, on a BDE triple bill with Candoco and Hofesh Shechter Company or book ahead for 19-20 March at SW, tickets from £12).

Hofesh Schechter at Sadler's Wells: Shechter brings back his 2009 powerfully dark, all female work The Art of Looking Back (2-3 February, in that BDE triple bill as above).

Protein Dance at the Place: Luca Silvestrini's LOL (Lots of Love) brings a touch of comedy to proceedings as his dancers search for love on the interweb, whilst getting tangled in a web of wires (4 February, £15).

Russell Maliphant at Sadler's Wells: With another art-inspired piece, this time French sculptor Auguste Rodin, Maliphant is back. After his flowing, circling Afterlight, it seems like a study of Rodin was meant to be (5 February - sold out, but you might be lucky with returns).

Outside BDE are two big celebrations:

Chinese New Year at Richmix: This is a family-friendly day with dragon dances, craft workshops and lots of Chinese food (5 February - free!).

Flamenco Festival at Sadler's Wells: Sadler’s Wells annual Flamenco festival is a crowd pleaser, warming up February with true Spanish heat. To see it in its purest, most instinctive form, catch Manuela Carrasco on 8 February, or for a performance that athletically fuses Flamenco with a variety of other styles, Olga Pericet Company on 10 February. The Festival runs from 7-17 February (tickets from £12).
