In 2006 we reported on the death of Joyce Vincent.
Joyce died alone in her Wood Green bedsit in 2003 but her body went undiscovered until 2006 when rent arrears prompted a housecall. Her remains were found in front of the telly – still on – surrounded by Christmas presents that she was in the process of wrapping.
This stark and shocking example of how absolute isolation is possible in a bustling city of millions is now the basis of a documentary feature film by Carol Morley which seeks to reconstruct Joyce’s life and ask how such a situation could arise.
Just think – how much do you really know about the people in your life?
There’s a special screening of Dreams of a Life at Cineworld Wood Green on 14 December followed by a Q&A with the director. It is then on general release at cinemas around London from 16 December through to the end of January 2012.
