Preview: Riot Acts @ Rich Mix

Four new performance works reacting to August's riots debut tomorrow at Rich Mix.

Publisher and live lit producer Penned in the Margins, along with Rich Mix, put out a call for new material inspired by the London riots. They've selected four different pieces, all of which are being performed for the first time:

  • poet Luke Wright combines the 1381 Peasants' Revolt with a contemporary tale of corruption
  • performance artist Greg McLaren will conduct A Score for a Riot
  • writer and actor Sophie Woolley places a bickering couple inside Stratford Westfield a couple of years hence
  • theatre collectives The Hurly Burly and Circus Kinetica update the Icarus myth and set it inside a burning building

None of the works will last much longer than 15 minutes and, while we doubt any of them will fully recapture the tension of simultaneously watching Twitter and the news and trying to work out if looters were heading down your street, they should still make you think. And, judging by their past work, be thoroughly entertaining.

Riot Acts is at Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road E1, on Saturday 19th November at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5.
