The V&A have announced their big blockbuster show for 2012.
Opening in May (so a few months before the Olympics), Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will go on show in the newly renovated Fashion Galleries at the museum.
Displayed over two floors, the exhibition will trace the evolution of eveningwear from 1950s debutante balls, through private parties and state occasions to the red carpet events and opening nights of today. Look out for the V&A's most recent acquisition, the satin Ralph & Russo gown worn by Beyonce when she sang at Barack Obama's inauguration ball in 2009.
In addition, you can see a Norman Hartnell dress designed for the Queen Mother; Princess Diana's "Elvis Dress" by Catherine Walker; gowns made by Zandra Rhodes, Jonathan Saunders and Hussein Chalayan; and dresses worn by Elizabeth Hurley, Bianca Jagger and Sandra Bullock. There’s even a dress made especially for the show: a metallic leather creation by Gareth Pugh.
