Last Saturday, the freestanding words WE LOVE BRIXTON appeared in Windrush Square with an open invitation for the community to interact with them, write on them and generally celebrate where they live. Music, singing and a 'speakers corner' helped to boost community spirit which took a battering during the August London riots.

The 8ft high letters were the idea of a maverick collective of locals, inspired by the likes of the Peckham Peace Wall. One of their number - Luke Forsythe - took these brilliant photos documenting the afternoon, which not only promoted Brixton but the idea of positive community activism.

Unfortunately, it was just a one day thing but Luke tells us that Lambeth Council is interested in putting them somewhere more permanently, perhaps on top of the town hall or in Brockwell Park, so watch this space.

There are rumours of a similar project popping up near Christmas. In the meantime, 'like' the We Love Brixton Facebook page and share the love.

Check out Luke's Flickrset for more.
